Yellow Wire as Freddie For A Day!

Yesterday morning, Ol Beach rocked up to Sunset Surf with his faithful Caravan in-tow – a comic moment marking the start of what was sure to be an epic day! Yellow Wire mustered with fellow SUP Riders to become Freddie For A Day and an incredible day of laughs, camaraderie and BBQ was certainly had by all!

Yellow Wire hooked up with Ant Baker, Pro rider and owner of Baker Academy who fully kit them up with the latest line of Fanatic boards and Ion surf gear. Looking like pro surfers and feeling supremely confident of the pending marathon, Ant Lucas then whipped out the box of fancy dress and pinned the most outrageous moustache to his face. He was Freddie and everyone followed.

As soon as the costumes were donned, the fun began. As the guys performed all sorts of poses to impersonate the great legend a small crowd of curious, humoured pedestrians had accumulated and were duly informed of the day’s ambitions and charitable pledge.

However, it wasn’t long before expert waterman Rob Small had to tell everyone the bad news that unfortunately the marathon attempt would not be able to go ahead. Despite the glassy surface conditions, there was a hurricane supplying the bay with waves that were over-head, brisk easterly winds and a serious under current that would have made the trip not only impossible but too dangerous.

Not to be dispirited, the team took the water for a full day surfing as Freddie Mercury. The ocean was filled with surfers, all of them totally bemused as a crew of paddleboarder’s glide by in fancy dress. Most surfers were so preoccupied by the larking around that the team had the waves mostly to their selves… They kept missing them! Ol and co were joined by about ten other paddleboarder’s throughout the day’s session and collectively, the paddler’s had easily the most fun.

So the day was rightfully dubbed a massive success despite not actually undertaking the marathon. Yellow Wire was put on the Paddleboard map. The day was finished off on the beach with a great BBQ cooked by master chef Ol Beach, a few beers and some good old banter.

Yellow Wire was Freddie For a Day – on a paddleboard!

Lots of people to thank for making this day such a great success, you all know what part you played so thanks to Ant Baker, Rob & Julie Small, Ant Lucas, Rob Lucas, Sunset Surf Cafe and everyone else who has contributed along the way.

Yellow Wire will remember this day for a long time and are honoured it was in aid of such a fantastic cause as The Mercury Phoenix Trust.

‘Your Summer’ #5: Michelle Steel, Artist & Photographer

‘Your Summer’ is part of a collaborative creative project to celebrate the release of Yellow Wire’s debut single ‘Where Is The Summer?’, out now.

“Being by the sea always inspires me. There is a different quality of light – the beach, the water, the sky all reflect the sun’s rays in a really special way. It’s this light that I am especially attracted to by the coast – it’s amazing at any time of year, winter or summer, cloudy or clear. This particular photo was taken in Porthmeor, Cornwall. Aside from the crisp, bright light on that particular day I was really attracted to the density, busyness and colours in this photo. It’s such a ‘British’ style seaside summer scene, with our fluorescent windbreaks and tents and sun brollies, like little ants all busily rubbing in sun cream or building sandcastles, crammed and packed onto this little stretch of the earth. We are such idiosyncratic, vibrant, communal, individual, amazing creatures. I never get bored of watching us.”

Ol’s Blog: Back From Boardmasters

Boardmasters was great! We were very lucky with the weather, which looked like it was going to close down on us all through the set. We were playing with a more acoustic vibe than is normal but it went down really well! It’s sad at Boardmasters because all the stages are facing the sea, which is great when you play but as a listener you don’t get to see the spectacular views off the cliff.

Plan B was great, with a huge band, and the crowd loved it. Seasick Steve played in the evening. Just him and his drummer drinking wine by the bottle and grooving like fuck! After that we hit the dance tents. I’ve still got whiplash from some overly adventurous moves.
